Sippin’ in the Club
For Nicki Minaj it’s Moscato, while Jay-Z prefers Champagne. What wine should one drink when the music is loud and the bass is pumping?
As the doors of the club swing open, suddenly you’re engulfed in the sound of music and raised voices, and bathed in flashing coloured lights. You head to the bar, falling into quick step with the pounding beats. But what wine to choose in an environment in which so much might influence what you select to sip?
Nightclubs provide an assault on the senses, with sound the dominant element. Amplified music and the general clamour means it’s often constantly above 100 decibels – that’s a similar volume level to power tools, or car horns. While there’s been no research specifically focused on exactly how a nightclub’s ambience can remix the wine drinking experience, there have been studies highlighting that noisy environments, loud music and coloured lights do affect taste perception in sometimes surprising ways.
